Pakistan inherited a very rich galaxy of musicians at the time of the independence, as most of the Muslim musicians decided to migrate to the new country for the obvious reasons; that they wanted to be in a land where they could live according to their beliefs.

Similarly there are no openings for Pakistani artists as no festivals are held where singers and musicians from other countries can come and creatively interact. There have been cases of individual groups visiting, and those not being the very best. At the All Pakistan Music Conference an artist or two from abroad has put in a performance. While there have been festivals of artists at the government level, no festival has ever been held which brings together musicians, theatre persons and or film makers.

Despite all the restrictions and religious strictures, the fact remains that the demand for music is immense. The more popular forms of music are thriving and many more pop groups have emerged in the last ten years or so than ever previously, while some of the folk forms and quwalli have also mushroomed. The classical musical forms have declined as those just cannot survive on the basis of the market.

The idea of this festival is to get together the sounds of Sufi, Soul, Folk, Roots, Folk -influenced Rock, Fusion Contemporary, Ethnic, besides other innovations, traditions and reinterpretations of the world music scene; to create an unforgettable occasion of this global ocean of music.

The First International Music Festival, first of its kind, was considered an important festival in south East Asia with its venue set in the historic city of Lahore. Lahore has always served as a good meeting point for both Eastern and Western artists.

The Festival required 200 participants from at least 15 countries from around the world while participation from Pakistan will consist of more than 150 represented representing from all over the country.
