The Second International Theatre & Dance
Festival Pakistan was a major cultural event to mark the 50
Years of Pakistan’s Independence. The theme of the Festival
was Freedom & Independence. However the choice of work remained
broad based and free, so that the productions were not tied
down to one theme only. The subject matter was against oppression,
be it political, economic, religious or against any gender group.
Momentous events have happened in the last years of the century
and the people’s quest for freedom has removed the great
barriers that stood between them and progress.
The Festival was a celebration of people’s
basic right to be free and Independent and to be able to express
themselves without fear. There were mounting apprehensions that
the Festival would be banned. Nevertheless it was a successful
milestone in our troubled history of dance and was very well
received by the public.
